It’s the July 4th weekend. Get out there and suck down some hotdogs, BBQ chicken, and clam fritters. Blow your fingers off with firecrackers. Every few hours, yell vile curses towards the Brits. Flirt with that sexy neighbor at the cookout—maybe even go skinny-dipping. But most importantly, listen to “Independence Day Dream.”

Want to sing along? Here are the lyrics.

I got a call from Mabel

She said, “Come on by.”

She said, “I’m having a few people over

For the 4th of July.”

I said, “I don’t know.”

She said, “Come on, you’ll have fun.”

I said, “Don’t be so sure.”

But I then I told her I’d come

Somewhere along the way

I got a little lost

I thought of skipping the shin-dig altogether

But that ideal got tossed

And I ended up somewhere on Catalina

Just past Cypress Avenue

Well, that road takes you to the coast

And all this god damned urban sprawl

Can really get you turned around

I was in no rush

There were some bikers there

Parked near a wall along the sea

And even though it was hot

They all had leather jackets that read

Born to be free

I just laughed

Because I knew

They lived by twice as many rules as me

I took off my shirt

I took a swim

And it cooled me to the core

And I made it to Mabel’s just a little after 4

With salt on my skin

When I rolled up

There was Christine Sacarinni,

Christine Ellis,

Christine Roberts,

And Evelyn St. James

And they were all smoking cigarettes

standing around outside the front door

There was a lot of noise coming from the backyard

And I walked through the house

It was dark

And it was cool

And for a moment it took my eyes to adjust

Just to see the floor

Out back there were clumps of people

And they were all gathered around

Some were talking about

Some old movie star

And Paul and Lisa had broken up

And Tanya had a new dog

And shady Dave had a new car

And Artie was switching jobs

And Yolanda showed me her scar

Somehow I got stuck

Talking to Murphy

About his lawn

And my brain left my head

And wandered around

My vacant body

Just slumped there

Right in the chair

And nearly fell to the lawn

And I got up

And I didn’t say a word

And I walked to the pool

I stared at the sky

And even though the fireworks weren’t until nine

I just stared up

And I could feel a slow night

Coming on

And Mabel had set up shop

And she was pouring them strong

But I knew better

And I brought my own bottle of

Cabernet sauvignon

She waved hi

She blew me a kiss

And then the moment was gone
